Homework Tip - use your iPad as a second screen
We are all working from home more often. Besides the chats by the coffee machine, there are undoubtedly more things you miss from the office. The screen on your laptop suddenly feels very small when you have to work on it all day, whereas at your desk you always had a larger or extra screen. Do you have an iPad at home? Then we have a handy tip for you: use your iPad as a second screen!
Which MacBook is compatible?
Sidecar is a handy app from Apple that transforms your iPad into a second display. To use your iPad as an extra monitor, you need one of the following MacBooks:- MacBook from 2016
- MacBook Air from 2018
- MacBook Pro from 2016
Make sure you have installed the latest software on your Mac! The app is automatically installed and only works on macOS Catalina.
Which iPad is compatible?
Ensure that your iPad is updated to at least iPadOS 13. Sidecar works on the following iPads:- iPad from 2018
- iPad Air from 2019
- iPad mini from 2019
- All iPad Pro models
It's important that both devices are logged into the same iCloud account. Sidecar can be used with WiFi, but you can also connect the iPad and your Mac with a cable. For stable use, we recommend connecting the devices with a cable. Your iPad will also charge. Note that if you want to use the app with WiFi, the devices must be connected to the same network.
Connecting your Mac and iPad
Sidecar is automatically installed on macOS Catalina, iPadOS 13, and iPadOS 14. You can activate the app in the following ways:- AirPlay: Click on the AirPlay icon at the top right of your Mac. It looks like a small screen with an arrow. Your iPad will appear in the menu that unfolds. By clicking on it, you activate Sidecar.
- The traffic light menu: In every program you open, there is a red-yellow-green dot menu in the top left corner. This allows you to close or minimize a program. By holding the green dot, you get the option to ‘move to iPad’. Note that the full-screen mode must be disabled for this.
- Spotlight: You can also find Sidecar by searching for it with the magnifying glass in the top right of your Mac screen. Don’t see a magnifying glass? Use the key combination CMD + space to activate it! You can also find Sidecar in 'System Preferences'.
