How do I protect my iPhone from freezing temperatures?
In a few days, it will officially be winter again! This also means that it’s getting colder, and it could start freezing and snowing. Some people really enjoy this, while others don’t at all. They’d rather turn up the heat and stay inside all day. Your
refurbished iPhone also prefers to stay warm in your coat pocket. iPhones don’t handle freezing temperatures very well. How can you protect your iPhone from the cold so you can still use it in cold weather? We give you five tips!
Why doesn't an iPhone handle cold temperatures well?
Your iPhone can have issues in wintry temperatures. There’s actually a very logical reason for this. Let us explain. A refurbished iPhone has a lithium-ion battery. This battery contains positive and negative electrodes, between which ions move. When it’s cold, these ions have a harder time moving through the battery. As a result, the battery has difficulty delivering the promised voltage. This can cause your iPhone to think the battery is dead when it’s not. In the end, your iPhone may even shut down by itself.
At what temperature does an iPhone work best?
An iPhone that is turned on works best at a temperature between 0 and 35 degrees Celsius. A turned-off iPhone can handle a wider temperature range. An iPhone that is off can handle temperatures between -20 and 45 degrees Celsius.
Tip 1: Keep your iPhone in your warm coat pocket
Now that it’s clear that your iPhone doesn’t work as well in lower temperatures, the most important tip we can give you is: keep your iPhone warm! Store it deep inside the pocket of your warm winter coat. Only take your iPhone out when you really need it! If you’re outside and don’t absolutely need your iPhone, turn it off completely so that the battery stays at the same level!
Tip 2: Don’t charge your iPhone in cold temperatures
Storing your turned-off iPhone in cold temperatures isn’t a problem. This won’t affect the quality of the iPhone. However, if you charge or use your iPhone in cold temperatures, the battery’s lifespan may decrease. Make sure never to charge your iPhone in cold temperatures. Also, avoid using your iPhone when it’s below 0 degrees Celsius.
Tip 3: Don’t turn your iPhone on immediately if it still feels cold
If you’ve completely turned off your iPhone in freezing temperatures and then go back indoors, the temperature difference will be greatest. Your iPhone will probably still feel ice-cold while it’s warm inside. If you turn your iPhone on immediately, this can cause problems. The rapid temperature change can cause some (metal) parts to expand. Condensation may also occur. Moisture inside your device is never good, as it can damage the components. So, wait until your refurbished iPhone reaches room temperature before turning it back on.
Tip 4: Use AirPods if you want to make a call
If you’re, for example, cycling or riding a scooter and you want to make a call, it’s best to use AirPods or regular earbuds. Don’t take your iPhone out of your pocket and hold it unprotected against your ear. When the icy wind blows against your iPhone, it will likely shut down quickly. That’s why it’s a better idea to use AirPods or earbuds for calls. This way, you don’t have to take your iPhone out of your pocket, keeping it warm. Just make sure to protect your AirPods with a scarf or hat, as they also don’t handle cold temperatures well.
Tip 5: Use touchscreen gloves
If you still want to use your iPhone, it’s a good idea to use touchscreen gloves. This way, your hands stay warm, and you can operate your iPhone’s screen. You can also keep your iPhone warm between your hands in the meantime.
