The Keurmerk Refurbished was founded on February 20, 2019. Since then, a lot has happened around the label. In this blog post, we explain what the Keurmerk Refurbished entails, how it came to be, and the milestones that have been achieved with the Keurmerk Refurbished so far.


What is the Keurmerk Refurbished?

If we first look at the definition of the word 'keurmerk' (quality mark), we quickly arrive at the following: 'a quality mark is a quality judgment about a product or service from a reliable source.' In the case of the Keurmerk Refurbished, this applies to refurbished products. Refurbished products are previously used products that are given a second life through inspection, cleaning, and repair.

The reliable source in this case is Techniek Nederland. This is an independent party that manages all matters related to the Keurmerk Refurbished. They are also the ones who issue certificates to all approved suppliers. The checks for the Keurmerk Refurbished are conducted by TÜV Nederland. As an independent certification institute, they perform technical audits on participants to ensure a high level of quality.

Refurbished devices that meet the strict conditions of the Keurmerk Refurbished are allowed to carry the label. Refurbished devices must be tested on 50 points, and the provider must be financially sound. In addition, the provider must offer a two-year warranty on the product as well as on the battery and charging accessories. All providers using the Keurmerk Refurbished also adhere to general cosmetic grading standards, making it easier to choose between different grades of refurbished products.


Why was the Keurmerk Refurbished created?

A quality mark provides trust, and that’s exactly what the Keurmerk Refurbished aims to project. There are many providers on the market that sell refurbished products, but not all of them offer high-quality products. With the Keurmerk Refurbished, consumers can be sure that they are purchasing a quality product. The Keurmerk Refurbished helps distinguish the good from the bad.

Which companies are allowed to carry the Keurmerk Refurbished?

Currently, there are six participants allowed to carry the Keurmerk Refurbished. These are:

What has been achieved so far with the Keurmerk Refurbished?

In the two years since the Keurmerk Refurbished was established, a lot has happened. The most important moments in the history of the Keurmerk Refurbished are highlighted below. 
  • February 20, 2019: Launch of the Keurmerk Refurbished for iPhones. 
  • March 15, 2019: Techniek Nederland awards the first certificates of the new Keurmerk Refurbished. 
  • July 12, 2019: Since the introduction of the Keurmerk Refurbished, 6% of all iPhones sold are refurbished. 
  • July 17, 2019: Refurbished MacBooks and iPads are now also allowed to carry the Keurmerk Refurbished label. 
  • February 12, 2020: Start of the Keurmerk Refurbished billboard campaign. Across the Netherlands, 1,000 billboards display the campaign ‘Why new? With a refurbished iPhone, you’re perfectly reachable too.’ 
  • February 20, 2020: The large Refurbished Barometer 2020 shows that consumers are willing to pay 44 euros more for the assurance of the Keurmerk Refurbished. 
  • March 15, 2020: Keurmerk Refurbished celebrates its first anniversary! 
  • May 15, 2020: Extension of the certificates for the six Keurmerk Refurbished members.
