What is iCloud family sharing?

Did you know that Apple has a special feature that allows you to easily share iCloud storage and more with your entire family? And that you can see how many hours per day your child uses their iPhone? This is called Family Sharing. This way, you only have to purchase apps that everyone wants to use once, you can easily share iCloud storage, and you can easily track how many hours your children are using their iPhones and what they’re using them for. Ideal!

What is Family Sharing?

Through 'Family Sharing,' apps, streaming services, and iCloud storage can be shared with all family members. One person sets up a family in their iCloud account and adds their family members to it. All purchases made in iTunes, the App Store, and iBooks are immediately available to everyone. Streaming services like Apple TV+ are also shared with the family when you have a subscription. You don’t have to share all purchases; you can easily set this up. Do you have an iCloud subscription? Then you can share this storage space with the family. A storage capacity of 200GB is more than enough for the whole family. Everyone in the iCloud family can use it, but they cannot see each other’s files. Everything you upload to iCloud remains available only to you unless you share it via a shared folder.

Parental controls for children and teens

The ability to share all purchases and apps is, of course, convenient, but your 10-year-old son shouldn’t have the same rights as you. Your credit card is often linked to your iCloud account, and there are a lot of fun, paid games in the App Store…

When your children are part of the family, you can set special limits for them. For example, when your son wants to download a paid app from the App Store, you can easily set it up so that you must first approve it.

You can also easily see how much time your daughter spends on her iPhone. You can set limits for all apps, such as a time limit of 2 hours per day for Facebook or Instagram. It’s also possible to see where your son or daughter’s iPhone is in case you lose them (or the iPhone).

Setting up Family Sharing

To set up an iCloud family on your iPhone, follow these steps:
  • Go to Settings and tap your name
  • Tap Family Sharing and then Set up Your Family
  • Follow the instructions and adjust all settings to your preferences

Adding a member

To add a family member, everyone must have their own Apple ID. Does your child not have an Apple ID? Easily create one on this page. Here’s how to add a new member to the family on an iPhone:
  • Go to Settings, tap your name, and then tap Family Sharing
  • Tap Add Member
  • Enter the name and correct email address and follow the instructions

Joining the family

To accept the invitation, follow these steps on the device of the member you want to add:
  • Go to Settings, tap the member's name, and go to Invitations
  • Follow the instructions. The member is now added to the family
Family Sharing works on almost all Apple devices. This way, you can easily share storage space and purchased apps with other family members. Additionally, you can keep an eye on your children.
